When to Book Your Maternity Photoshoot in Kent (and How to Get Ready)

The best time in your pregnancy for a maternity shoot, what to wear, studio, home or outdoors, and how to get the most from your session in Kent.

By Juliet

Pregnancy has a way of feeling endless and fleeting at the same time. One week you are only just telling people, and the next you are wondering where the months went.

If you have been thinking about a maternity photoshoot, you are probably wondering when to book it, what to wear, and where it should happen. This guide walks you through all three, so your session feels calm, easy and completely you.

When Is the Best Time for a Maternity Photoshoot?

Most mums find that somewhere in the third trimester feels just right. Your bump is beautifully rounded, but you are usually still comfortable enough to move, walk a little and enjoy the session.

Every pregnancy is different, though. If you are carrying twins, feeling more tired than expected, or simply want to make sure nothing gets in the way, an earlier session can feel much more relaxed. We will talk it through together and choose a date that suits your body and your plans.

“The best time is the time you will feel most like yourself.”

Golden-hour evenings and weekend dates tend to go first, so it is worth getting in touch in your second trimester. That gives us time to plan your outfits and location without any rush.

If you would also like newborn photographs, it is a lovely time to think about those too. Newborn sessions are best photographed in the first two weeks of life, so securing your date during pregnancy means one less thing to arrange once your baby arrives.

Studio, Home or Outdoors?

Based in Sevenoaks, I photograph maternity sessions across Kent, in the studio, in your home, or outdoors, wherever feels most like you.

A studio session is perfect if you love a more editorial look, with beautiful fabrics, soft flattering light and a calm, private space. A session at home feels intimate and relaxed, especially if you would like your partner or older children to join in. And an outdoor session, whether that is golden fields or a beach at sunset, brings movement, warmth and that glowing natural light.

What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself. Clothes that hug or celebrate your bump tend to photograph beautifully, and flowing fabrics add lovely movement, especially outdoors.

Soft neutrals, warm earthy tones and rich jewel colours all work well. A fitted dress, a sheer robe or kimono, or simple lace layers can each create a completely different feel. Try to avoid large logos or busy patterns, which can pull attention away from you and your bump.

If your partner or children are joining, choose colours that sit happily together rather than matching exactly. I am always happy to help with outfit ideas before your session.

How to Feel Relaxed on the Day

Lots of mums tell me they feel nervous about being photographed, and that is completely normal. You do not need to know how to pose. I will gently guide you through everything, from where to place your hands to how to stand, so it all feels natural.

Wear comfortable shoes to arrive in, bring a drink and a snack, and give yourself plenty of time so nothing feels rushed. We will take breaks whenever you need them.

Celebrating This Season

Your maternity photographs are about so much more than your bump. They capture the strength, the softness and the quiet anticipation of this moment, a chapter that closes so quickly once your baby arrives.

If you are planning a maternity photoshoot in Kent, I would love to hear from you. Maternity sessions start from £295, and I am always happy to chat through your ideas before you book.
